A better way to book your cinema tickets.

Conceptual case study.

Overview of the project

This was a mock project as a part of Google's UX design certificate.

I have chosen to design a cinema booking app for mobile phones. The idea was to create a simple booking app with a quick flow for buying tickets and with some extra features.

Following the standard process of empathize, define, ideate, test and prototype I created problem statements, user personas, competitive audit and a short usability study before finalizing high-fidelity mockups.

Tools: Figma, Miro, Usabilityhub

Duration: 3 weeks (September 2022)

Empathize and define phase

For the start, I created very simple research with basic questions to help me to understand the potential user. Based on the outcome I created two personas, user journey, and problem statements.

Research goals:

Identify how people think about choosing a movie What are their frustrations about going to cinemas?

Target audience:

15 to 35 living in the city, young professionals or students who go to the cinema a few times a month, include people with disabilities

Questions for interview:

  • What is your practical experience with going to the movies and buying a ticket?

  • How important is the seating for you?

  • How far ahead do you plan to go to the movies?

  • Have you ever experienced any frustrations in the process of buying movie tickets?

User journey
Main user flow

Ideate: Sketches and low-fi wireframes

At this phase I started with the with hand sketches of the main user flow screens. The next step was creating wireframes in Figma and a simple prototype.

This prototype has been tested (see the usability study file) and based on the findings I created 2nd iteration of the wireframes.

After conducting quick usability study with 5 participants I created an affinity diagram in Miro, and combined the feedback into 3 themes.

The study showed that users find the main screen confusing (did not understand the differences), then requested more options to pick a date and the text of the button was not clear enough.

Based on this I made appropriate changes and created 2nd iteration: Figma Prototype

High fidelity mockups

My takeaways

This was my first project where I followed the standard UX process from the very beginning and this gave a good overview of what this kind of project can look like.

I also learned the importance of iteration and following the standard UX/UI practices. This project might be revised in terms of UI in the future.
